#3 TRUE HAIRLESS

DEGREES OF HAIRLESSNESS

Chinese Cresteds are still an exotic breed, filled with mystery. In particular, the amount of hair a hairless Chinese Crested can have is mysterious to most people. Chinese Cresteds can be born with double layer of hair, powderpuffs, and as hairless. But hairless puppies can be almost bald naked all the way to super hairy where they can be almost powderpuffs.

When families approach us for a puppy, they have questions and one of is on the amount of hair on a hairless Chinese Crested. We wanted to make it as easy as possible to educate families on the amount of body hair and furnishings a hairless Crested can be. We want our families to be educated and make informed decision on a Crested puppy.

Hairless Cresteds come in a wide range of hairlessness. Like humans, they can be really nude to being quite hairy. Most Chinese Crested breeders will say their puppies are either hairless, hairy hairless or powderpuffs.  We like to catagorized the degree of hairlessness to a finer point: True Hairless, Hairless, Hairy Hairless, Very Hairy Hairless and Super Hairy Hairless. Then of course there is the powderpuff siblings, that can be born in a litter of hairless puppies. Depending on the look you want and the amount of grooming you want to put in, getting a puppy with the right degree of hairlessness can be important. Of course some families do not care as they are just Crested obsessed. They will love a Crested with our without hair. But for others, the look is very important.

When we got our first Crested girl, Lady Godiva, we had no idea how hairy she was. When we brought her home, she was a smooth and hairless Goddess. After day to at home, she started to sprout hair on almost 70% of her body. We didn’t mind but wanted to know what to do with it. We called her breeder to ask how to care for her skin and hair (this was a time when information on Crested care was not readily available). Her breeder just said, “Bring her back if you don’t want her!” Wow that made me cry. We were in love with her. She was our baby. We would never think of returning her. That was just insane! We just want to get information so we can properly care for her. Even when we would see Godiva’s breeder at dog shows, she did not want to know anything about Godiva. She was just another puppy that was placed. From these experiences, we have chosen to be better breeders. We want our families to know what to expect and what to do to care for their babies. We want to be available for our families when they have any questions or just want to share special stories of their babies.

To avoid confusion, at Mythic, we use a special scale to rate the hair. We have found our scale to be really useful in evaluating our puppies as well as educating Crested lovers. From 1 being almost bald to 9 being so hairy it can be difficult to know if the puppy is hairless or puff. Powderpuff Chinese Cresteds have a double coat (hair and a cottony under coat) while the hairiest hairless Chinese Cresteds will not have a cottony under coat. They will also have full dentition as they do not have the hairless gene.

I prefer the true hairless pups 1-3 on our scale, while Tim prefers them hairier 4-9. Dante only likes the super hairy hairless 8-9 and powderpuffs. Raiden loves every one of them equally. I love fine Crested skin and am willing to have less furnishings while Tim likes the flash and willing to do the grooming to keep them looking great. We know everyone has their personal preferences and as families want puppies of every degree of hairlessness, we are happy to have a variety. But we are happy to say we are known for our tiniest sized, standard and rare colored eyed, Chinese Cresteds with exceptionally great skin and wonderful temperaments.

Please keep in mind we do our best to match a puppy based on temperament, gender, coloring, size and degree of hairlessness. Seldom do puppies fit neatly even into our degree of hairlessness. A puppy maybe a 5 but have more of a scattered body hair pattern verses having it concentrated along the back to tail and down the legs. True to Crested uniqueness, the degree of hairlessness and the way it presents on the puppy is different for each Chinese Crested.

Wonderful information on Chinese Cresteds. Keep up the information for us old timers and for the newbie Crested families.

Cresteds are like people with varying degrees of body hair. Hopefully yours articles will give insight into Chinese Cresteds for people wanting one, or two, or three… simply magical

    Hi Janette and Dave,
It good that you have met our Chinese Cresteds. Our Cresteds are smaller in size only. They are so loved here at our home. Yes, there are jealous or ignorant people but Tim and I just ignore them. Personally, I think they should spend their time taking care of their puppies instead of worrying about anyone else. At the end of the day, we know our puppies are healthy and happy, and our families appreciate what we do. When we have families who love our puppies and come back for their next, and recommend us to their friends and families, it says more than anyone who do not know us.

    Josh and Stephie,
Our friends have a puppy from Mythic and he is incredibly small and healthy. He is a firecracker. He comes to play with our babies and we all adore him. Our Cresties are bigger like yours, 13 and 19 pounds and Dynomite can still play with them. He looks like a baby compared to them. Thankfully, our kids are gentle with him. Our friends didn’t want to adopt from our breeders and now we see why. We wish our babies’ breeder were more like Mythic. We only saw couple of pictures before we bought them. We have followed Mythic but was skeptical. How can a tiny Crested be healthy. But spending so much time with Dynamite has won us over. He goes to the same vet as our kids and she has told us he is better bred than ours. No health issues what so ever! We have heard a few people who “bad mouth” them saying they should breed to the standard but it’s out of ignorant or jealousy. It would be nice if other breeders learned from them instead of being jealous. We do have to say we are a bit jealous of our friends too. When we go out as a group, Dynamite is treated like royalty. Our babies are young but one day we’ll adopt from them.
    Cheers

    Hi Josh and Stephie,
Thank you. When you are ready, fill out our adoption form and then we can start to get to know each other. Our adoption process is long but our families say it is worth the extra time and effort.

    Dear Mythic,
We have read everything on your website twice now! We are so impressed. We were officially introduced to you by a family who have 2 of your Cresties. As we were waiting to board our plane, we saw 2 tiny mini hairless boys sitting on the Mommy’s lap. Of course we had to go say hi and the parents were just the sweetest answering all of our questions. They had nothing but praise for their breeder. When you name came up, we were curious. We had heard about you through the breeders we have bought our Cresteds from and people on a blog site. The main comments were that breeding smaller is unhealthy and that your family is not breeding to the standard. We had agreed with this. But now we are complete converts. Seeing is believing. The boys parents gushed and gushed about your family and how nice it was to go visit you at your home. They loved their experience with you and even now, they said you and Tim are always happy to speak with them.
We got to hold the boys on our laps and they are just so well mannered, playful and loving. Not only that, they are perfect miniature Cresteds with the best skin we have seen and just beautiful faces. So these must be puppies still to be so small. Well they are 5 and 4 years and the parents say the healthiest and best Cresteds they have ever loved. Like us, they are die hard Crested family. Between our stories of Cresteds we have and have loved, the boys sat on our laps or on their parents laps. We had such a crowd around us. Everyone as enthralled. There was one man who said they are cute even though they are normally ugly. Another convert to the Crested world.
Currently we have 3 Cresties: a blue eyed hairy hairless girl at 16 pounds, a hairless boy at 18 pounds and our smallest one at 14 pounds. Our girl was shipped from a boutique pet store that breeds and sells blue eyed puppies. She was suppose to be smaller at “8 pounds” but she is a glorious 16. We were afraid a 4-5 pound Crestie would be unhealthy or just too small for us. We would have preferred her to be around 8-10 pounds so she could travel with us every where but it is as it is. We love her and are still working on her skin. We call her our pretty little girl but now it is very funny after meeting micro ones.
We asked so many questions and the parents were so gracious. We did ask for your info and they said to read your website first. They warned us that you are very picky and have turned down families. Well we hope we will pass your test so we can bring home our next Cresties from you. We have bought from AKC show breeders, hobby breeders and boutique stores and none of them want to know us. They want the money and then they will ship. We hope other breeders start being as demanding as you are.
    Thank you,
    Josh and Stephie
