LEVEL OF HAIRLESSNESS: A super hairy hairless #8 looks very much like a powderuff at birth with skimpier hair on the arm pits. But is it is not until they are at least 5 weeks when we will know if they are a powderpuff or a super hairy Crested. Like #9, these puppies are born with a lot of hair on their body. We check the amount of hair around the groin area, the arm pit, neck and chest. Super hairy hairless puppies will have less hair in these area. In the groin area, the hair will start further up the belly. In boys, the hair starts above the tip of the penis while in the powderpuffs, the hair starts below the tip of the penis. These puppies can have sparse hair covering most of their belly and inner thigh area. As they get older, around 4-6 weeks, we flip through hair and see if there is an undercoat. #8 hairless will not have it and each individual hair can be seen.
Most show breeders love when super hairy hairless puppies are born because they will have so much furnishings as an adult. They have tons of “flash” with furnishings growing long and flowing. They buzz and then shave them down and in movement, they seem to float through the air. It’s very glamorous and because breeders keep breeding for them and showing them, it becomes the breed standard. Judges keep seeing them in the show ring and reward the best of the super hairy hairless Cresteds. Most examples of Chinese Cresteds most people see on the internet or in pictures are the super hairy hairless Cresteds, #7 and #8 being the most popular.
People who love the lush furnishings and don’t want to feel bare skin will adore the super hairy hairless. Our daughter love them or powderpuff as she prefers to feel soft hair all over while enjoying the sweetness, charm and beauty of a Crested.
Prince Banjo and Prince Calisto are example of #8.
