Mythic Kingdom Puppies

“Is this puppy a hairless or a powderpuff? Only his breeder and groomer will know.”

LEVEL OF HAIRLESSNESS:  A super hairy hairless looks, with a quick glance, almost like a powderpuff. When they are born, we ask, “Is this one a super hairy hairless or a powderpuff? We’ll have to wait and see.” These puppies are born with a lot of hair on their body. We check the amount of hair around the groin area, the arm pit, neck and chest. Super hairy hairless puppies will have less hair in these area. In the groin area, the hair will start further up the belly. In boys, the hair starts above the tip of the penis while in the powderpuffs, the hair starts below the tip of the penis. So we wait to see what their hair looks like at 3 to 4 weeks. We flip through hair and see if there is an undercoat. If not, then the little one is a super hairy hairless Chinese Crested.

Most show breeders love when super hairy hairless puppies are born because they will have so much furnishings as an adult. They have tons of “flash” with furnishings growing long and flowing. They buzz and then shave them down and in movement, they seem to float through the air. It’s very glamorous and because breeders keep breeding for them and showing them, it becomes the breed standard. Judges keep seeing them in the show ring and reward the best of the super hairy hairless Cresteds. Most examples of Chinese Cresteds most people see on the internet or in pictures are the super hairy hairless Cresteds.

People who love the lush furnishings and don’t want to feel bare skin will adore the super hairy hairless. Our daughter love them or powderpuff as she prefers to feel soft hair all over while enjoying the sweetness, charm and beauty of a Crested.

Prince Paris above is a great example of #9. In the left column, his hair has been grown out for 9 weeks. It is soft and lush. In the short haircut, you can see his skin on his chest, thighs and on his back… The bare skin on his crotch area can be clearly seen. The part on the back is big much more visible than on a powderpuff who will have a much smaller part. On the right column, he was buzzed with a #40 blade. We do not have our Crested so they just got the buzz down. The skin is easily viewable but he does have a peach fuzz or velvety feel.

GROOMING:  Grooming a Level 9 super hairy hairless Cresteds is very easy. It would seem to require more grooming but as they have so much body hair, their parents have more options. They can either buzz them down to a nudy cut on a regular basis or let it grow out as long as they want. When they get a close nudy cut, the skin can be seen and the body hair feels like the softest of thin velvet. With a powderpuff in a nudy cut, the skin cannot be seen and the hair feels like soft velvet too, but just thicker in density. So, the body hair an be trimmed every 2 months or every year. They never look messy if their body hair is kept long. They do require regular washing and if the body hair is kept long, they require regular hair brushing. Because they don’t have the double coat of a powderpuff, their hair tangles less so they can be brushed out weekly verses almost daily for a powderpuff with long hair.
