Mythic Kingdom Puppies

Prince Blue Jay is our model. He is 16 months in these pictures with a fresh autumn nudie hair cut. He was born with white, black and brown furnishings which has dramatically lightened up. He also has rare double multi colored eyed, known as mosaic eyes.

Once you go past a #9 hairless Chinese Crested, you are in the powderpuff zone. They can be born in the same litter as the bald-super hairy hairless siblings. They carry the dominant hair gene. )You can read more about hairless genetics) These puppies have hair pretty much all over when born. But it’s not until they are older when the powderpuff under coat develops. This means that they have a layer of fine human like hair, just like the hairless sibling but they also have an undercoat that is super fine and soft.

So how can anyone know the difference between a super hairy hairless and a powderpuff at birth. Well, sometimes it’s an educated guess. Other times, it’s clear a puppy is a powderpuff based on the thickness and the amount of body hair.As they start to develop, the hairless puppies’ ears start to go up. The powderpuffs on the other hand do not or if they do, it’s part up and mostly down. Due to the amount of hair and puff under coat, the powderpuff’s ears are weighed down and have a difficult time going up naturally. For breeders who tape the ears, and every Chinese Crested breeder we know or have seen do tape, few of the puffs may go up and stay up. But most will keep taping the ears well past 6 months. A taped ear will have a particular look: the mid part of the ear will be folded inward instead of being open.

So what are the definitive ways of knowing if a Crested is a puff or super hairy? 1. Due to the cotton candy like undercoat, the skin on a powderpuff cannot be seen when the hair is parted.

2. The powderpuffs have a full set of canine teeth. So that means waiting until they are older to absolutely know.

3. Compared to a super hairy hairless #8-#9, powderpuffs furnishings (crest, socks, and plume) are much thicker and have a pom pom look. But it goes slower and must be really maintained to have it grow as long as the super hairies.

4. When buzzed down, the powderpuff’s body be super soft due to the undercoat.

5. As the buzzed hair start to grow and there’s half and inch or more of growth, push the hair in the opposite direction to see if there is an undercoat or if every stand of hair is visible.

5. Even with all of the above, we have over the years heard Crested breeders say to absulutely know 100% is to breed the suspected puff to another puff. As pet family, this option is out. So it’s up to the breeder to know and pass on the correct information.

Powderpuff’s can be buzzed down to have a nudie haircut or the hair can be left to grow as long as it can, to the floor, show cut. If you like the “show cut” then diligent grooming is needed. If you are going for the easier maintenance of the hairless nudie look which we prefer, keep the face and neck buzzed. The ear hair can be left long or buzzed.

Prince Blue Jay has the half up ears

Even though he is older by 4 months, Prince Blue Jay’s crest is not as long as hairless #9 Prince Bandit.

Looking close up at his socks. It’s so think!

“When I first went to Kmart, I was so excited that I could bring my kind of taste to the masses. They didn’t have 100 percent cotton sheets at mass market in 1987. We made those in yellow and pink and pale blue.”
